"The game is a draw"

This forum discusses the game of Nefatavl. Nefatavl, hnefatafl or tablut is an old scandinavian game dating more than a thousand years back. See also www.nefatavl.dk.

"The game is a draw"

Post by mdj » Thu Jan 27, 2005 21:38

I have created this forum, because I would like to discuss the various possibilities of ending a game being played passively. I believe that a "draw" should not be a possible result, given the assymetry of the game, so it is necessary to decide a winner, if the game does not show any progress after some measurement (like the 50-move rule in chess).
Post your ideas, and let's have a discussion!

there can be a problem if the king's army is too strong to lose and the other one can just defend the exit points, but there are two or some more to attack the king's army.
i had this kind of match when i played it with my brother who couldn't win because i was too trained, and after i explained it partible it wasn't possible to beat him.

Exactly. Actually, you don't even have to be "too trained", simple strategies exist to efficiently defend the king, as there are for defending the exits.

So, any ideas how to solve the problem? A simple rule addition that will make these techniques impossible?

you could say:
if there in no balance anymore (e.g. less then two ?fighters? against 10 ones(i'm not english, i don't know the english word for this))
then abort the game. But if it's the king i would prefer the technique of "tablut online 1.21": If you've lost all soldiers but the king, you can draw five times, then the match is finished (normal play: you have to take him to exit)
